One Second Forever

One Second Forever

The desire to capture a fleeting moment and transform it into something permanent is a deeply human need that is familiar to us all—yet remains unattainable. In the work of Austrian artist Clemens Wolf, this very tension has been a central focus for nearly two decades. The retrospective at Hotel Linde in Carinthia presents a comprehensive overview of Wolf’s series of works. In doing so, it not only offers insight into the development of his artistic practice but also reveals how consistently his works engage with the question of how an irretrievable moment can be experienced not through representation but through the material itself.

At the beginning of his artistic career, Wolf turns his attention to ruins and urban spaces that bear the imprint of history and in which change, decay, or new beginnings become visible. His early works originate in photography and are transferred to painting using stencil techniques. Through carefully developed processes of transfer and layering, Wolf created images that reveal themselves gradually and invite viewers into an active engagement.

In the years that followed, Wolf’s focus shifted increasingly toward public space and its structures. He discovered a central area of interest in the motif of the fence. In the Fence Drawings, the line breaks free from the surface and enters the space: drawing becomes object, structure becomes sculpture. Boundaries no longer appear as clearly defined divisions, but as spatial systems that change with movement and perspective. It remains open whether the viewers are inside or outside a structure. Wolf’s works thereby challenge familiar forms of perception and open up states of in-betweeness.

By turning to expanded metal, the artist further develops this approach. In the Expanded Metal paintings, the material no longer functions merely as a motif, but as an active picture-bearing surface: the paint is applied using the expanded metal, so that its texture is directly imprinted onto the picture surface. Gesture and structure enter into an open dialogue in which control and chance interact.

Parallel to this, Wolf begins developing parachute works, which gradually branch out into various groups of works, including Parachute Paintings, Parachute Sculptures, Parachute Objects, and Linedrawings. The starting point is the material itself: used parachutes that already carry within them a history of movement, body, and time. In a complex process, they are folded, fixed, and stabilized with epoxy resin. Each fold arises as the result of a unique moment initiated by the artist but not entirely controllable.

The epoxy-resin-compressed works also enter into a close dialogue with the exhibition site at the Wörthersee. Their reflective surfaces capture the shifting light of the lake and translate its movement into the material. The surfaces evoke the appearance of the lake itself, yet what appears to be a wet or liquid surface is in fact solid epoxy resin. This tension between appearance and material state points to a recurring theme in Wolf’s work—the interplay between visible effect and actual materiality.

Another group of works consists of the Expanded Metal Pigment Paintings, in which pigments are scattered, condensed and transferred onto aluminum. The resulting works create structures that cannot be reproduced and thus become singular events. In a further step, Wolf develops site-specific installations that bring together works from this series—created independently of one another—in ever-changing constellations. Although each work stands on its own, their arrangement in space and their relationship to the respective location give them an additional layer of meaning. For the exhibition, a hanging installation conceived as a constellation was created. At its core is the interest in breaking away from classical forms of presentation and understanding exhibitions not as a mere juxtaposition of works, but as a spatial practice that actively incorporates the location.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, while tidying up his studio, the artist rediscovered earlier elements of his practice—such as stencils and expanded metal—and began developing a series of Remix works. In this process, fragments and elements are reused, and existing works are rearranged, reinterpreted, and brought together to form independent works.

His central focus remains consistent across the various groups of works presented in the exhibition: an exploration of the moment and the interplay between perception, material, and memory. His works aim to activate the viewer’s cognitive memory—that level at which impressions are not only perceived but also stored, linked, and emotionally conveyed.

This interest is also reflected in the exhibition site itself. The Hotel Linde at the Wörthersee is a place closely associated with vacation, memory, and special, fleeting moments that one wishes to preserve, even as they inevitably pass. This tension between permanence and transience directly connects the venue with Wolf’s artistic practice. His works revolve around the same experience: the desire to hold on to the atmosphere of a moment—perhaps shaped by the sound of the lake or the evening light—even though it is already fading away the second it is experienced.

In this way, One Second Forever becomes a very precise formulation of Wolf’s artistic position: an attempt not to preserve the irretrievable, but to make it visible through the experience itself.

Since his graduation at the University of Arts Linz, he is fascinated by dilapidated material like fences in front of dumps, abandoned warehouses and unfinished buildings.

In his latest works, he sets his main focus on the process of transformation haunted by his own history. Old discarded parachutes (he is a passionate parachutist) are transformed into sensual objects. After they are immersed in epoxide resin they are layed out in tondi, hung or stand up as sculpture or stretched on frames as paintings, every crease being arranged meticulously and finally left to dry.

When we examine Clemens Wolf’s obsessive and mysterious work, it’s obvious that the frontier between painting, sculpture and drawing places a great importance. The surface of the pieces with its powerfully vivid palette, reveals a world that is almost organic. While the artist sees the fabric’s contractions as a stylized representation of decomposition and decay, the resin he uses to hold the folds in place gives the works a distinctive glossy aspect and an intensity that is brought out by the delicacy of the coiled up parachute cords. The choice of such a lightweight and an aerial object as the parachute conjures up the fundamental notion of gravity.
